Armenia is one of the cradles of world winemaking. Here, on the fertile slopes of the Ararat Valley and in the sunny gorges of Vayots Dzor, grapes were grown even before Egypt and Rome appeared. Today, wine festivals in Armenia have become not only a gastronomic holiday, but also a symbol of the revival of ancient traditions.
Winemaking in Armenia: From Cave to Bottle
Armenian winemaking has a history of over 6,100 years . This is confirmed by an archaeological find in the Areni cave (Vayots Dzor region), where the world's oldest wine storage facilities, presses, clay vessels and even traces of grapes were discovered. All this testifies to the developed culture of winemaking as early as the 4th millennium BC.
Wine in Armenia has always been an integral part of rituals, holidays and trade . Guests were treated to it, churches were consecrated with it, and it was offered as a sign of peace and respect. Autochthonous grape varieties such as Areni, Khndokhni, Kakhet, Voskehat, Garandmak have survived and are still used for unique wines.
Modern Armenian wine: a combination of traditions and technologies
Today, Armenian winemakers are confidently entering international markets. Many of them are reviving forgotten recipes and varieties , while introducing modern production technologies. Armenian wines are noted at prestigious competitions, and wineries are becoming a place of pilgrimage for wine connoisseurs.
Among the famous producers:
Karas Wines, Zorah, Trinity Canyon, Voskeni, Van Ardi, Tushpa, Armenia Wine, Zulal, Noa, Kataro and others.
It is thanks to them that the Yerevan Wine Festival has become the country's main wine event , which is eagerly awaited by both tourists and locals.
