Mysteries about the origin of the name:

  • Saint Eustathius: According to one legend, the monastery was named after Saint Eustathius , a disciple of the Apostle Thaddeus, who suffered martyrdom for his faith.
  • “Tatev” – “give wings”: From Armenian “tatev” is translated as “give wings.” The monastery seemed to be soaring in the sky, as if it could really break away from the rock and take off.
  • The architect and his dream: According to legend, the architect who built Tatev threw himself into the abyss after completing the construction, exclaiming: “Lights, Surb, ta tev!”, which means “Holy Spirit, give me wings!”
  • Liberation from sins: According to another belief, the soul that steps into the walls of the temple gains wings, throwing off the burden of sins and suffering.
